In 1846, Carl Zeiss founded a workshop for optical and precision instruments in Jena (Germany). He increasingly specialised in the manufacture of microscopes. Soon, he was not only supplying the regional market but exporting his products worldwide. Today, Carl Zeiss AG is a holding company comprising several subsidiaries. Besides Oberkochen and Jena, Wetzlar and Göttingen in Germany, Dublin and Minneapolis in the USA and Shanghai in China are the most important production locations worldwide.
