Description
It takes its name from the year 1826, when James Purdey moved his business to larger premises at the prestigious 314/315 Oxford Street, later renaming it 314½ Oxford Street in 1827. This refined accessory recalls the era in which Purdey established itself as a leading address for exclusive sporting guns and fine accessories in London.
The pocket square – also known as a pochette – has a long and storied tradition. Originally carried as a simple handkerchief in the breast pocket, it was elevated to the status of a decorative accessory by King Richard II of England, swiftly becoming a discreet symbol of cultivated refinement. Particularly during the Biedermeier period around 1830, colourful squares were worn with riding attire, before becoming, from 1860 onwards, an indispensable detail in the wardrobe of the style-conscious gentleman.
Today, the pocket square completes any elegant outfit, making a subtle statement of taste and individuality. Whether neatly folded or casually draped, this silk square lends every appearance a refined note of tradition and understated elegance.
