Each year in spring, many hunters and fawn rescue associations take action to protect young deer from the dangers posed by tractors and mowing equipment.
As fawns instinctively hide in tall grass and crouch rather than flee when threatened, the start of the mowing season in early summer often leads to tragic consequences. Since the fawns do not run away and are difficult to spot from the tractor, fawn rescuers set out year after year – often equipped with drones and thermal imaging cameras – to search meadows scheduled for mowing.
While the mower is operating, the fawns must be safely secured, for example in boxes, so that they can be released back onto the meadow after the work is done.
