Corduroy is a fabric that has transcended all social classes. In the 18th century, fine ribbed velveteen was considered extraordinarily sumptuous and was primarily reserved for wealthy nobles and kings. At that time, it was nicknamed »Cord du roi«, which means »Cord of the kings«, and eventually became the term »Corduroy«, which is still in use today. Towards the end of the 18th century, looms developed in Manchester revolutionised production by manufacturing the material in large quantities at low cost. This led to corduroy being worn primarily by the working class during industrialisation.
